Sun Pillar

Well so far it has been a busy year and it only just started. I am taking a break from posting photos weekly and concentrating on doing some photo projects and experimenting. Here is a photo my wife Barbara took with her new Fuji X-E1. This sun pillar was pretty neat, she is still getting used the camera, but it is an improvement over her old G-10. Taken in Laguna Beach, using the 18-55mm zoom lens at 55mm. Enjoy.

The final image for this year… been a long road but a fun one. I sure hope that this coming year is better for me and for everyone else as well. This sunset was taken from Laguna Beach after a brief but intense rain storm. It was just starting to clear a little locally but then sun peaked out right as it got close to the horizon. You can see Catalina Island off in the distance. Taken with the Fuji X-Pro 1 and a Samyang 14mm lens. Enjoy and thanks for looking this year at my images, many more to come in the following year. Happy New Year everyone!

Well hope you are not tired of sunsets, I love watching them, the pastel colors and setting moon caught my eye. Watched a pod of dolphins swim by, on their way somewhere, very relaxing after a day at the job…. Fuji X-Pro1, 60mm macro. Enjoy.

Well another glorious sunset this week, taken in Laguna Beach. The clouds started building in the afternoon and as it got closer to sunset they were not disappearing, so grabbed the camera gear and headed out and took this shot. Just before sunset there was a nice large rainbow. Shot with the Fuji X-Pro 1 and the 18mm lens on a tripod. Enjoy.

I love watching sunsets and ones that get all kinds of nice colors and clouds can be especially nice, I never get tired of watching sunsets. Here is a sunset from Wed. evening that was pretty cool, some nice colors and then a few minutes later it all changes. Taken with the Fuji X-Pro 1, the first was taken with the 35mm f1.4 and the second was with the 18mm f2.0. Both are very minimal processing, pretty much just straight out of the camera. Enjoy.

The last beacon of light for the day as the sun slowly sinks in the west. Taken in Laguna Beach, Fuji X-Pro 1, 60mm f2.4 macro at f2.4 and 1/3300 at ISO 400.

Image of the week #30

Delicate wispy clouds, softly lit by the setting sun….. this weeks subject. Taken with a Fuji X-Pro 1 and 35mm f1.4 lens at f4, 1/75 second at ISO 200.  The sun was well below the horizon and the immediate area around the horizon was muddy looking and not very interesting, but almost straight up  we ended up getting this nice soft pastel palette to finish off the day. Hope you enjoy it.

Image of the week #20

This weeks images are of the partial annular solar eclipse. Taken with a Canon 1Dm4 and 100-400mm lens at 400mm and a 1.4x extender.  These shots will be part of a timelapse movie of the sequence. Also included is shot of the camera setup that was used to take the solar images. This setup will track the motion of the earth so that the sun always stayed in the frame as it was going down towards the horizon. The marks on the surface of the sun are sun spots. From the location, east of Temecula, the sun went down below the horizon as it was coming out of being eclipsed, the last shot is more red because the sun was right on the horizon and I should have increased the exposure and you can also see some of the brush on the horizon as the sun was setting. The eclipse occurred on May 20, 2012.

Image of the week #4

Here is this week’s image, a sunset shot, looking at Catalina Island with the sun setting behind it. I rushed home because the sunset was so colorful, this was near the end, did not have time to setup a tripod so I rested the camera on the railing and turned on the IS to help stabilize the shot. This is a 1 second exposure at f4.0 taken with a 24-105mm lens at 73mm on a Canon 5dMII. All I did was adjust the contrast I did not add any saturation or change the color this is how it came out of the camera with just a little contrast adjustment. Amazing colors,  I really need to make sure I carry my camera around with me, but at least I did not miss all of it, it was nice to watch the colors while driving too and just enjoy it visually. Thanks for looking.

Sunset Panos

There was some nice clouds on Friday, some remnants of a tropical storm, so I setup on the roof and shot a few panos of the setting sun. These are 5 sets of image in portrait orientation with 3 exposures per frame to capture all the details and the available light. Processed in PTGUI and Photoshop.  Shot in Laguna Beach and within about 5 minutes of each other. Shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Samyang 14mm f2.8 lens.
